Lucinda Williams & Three Dollar PBRs

I went to see Lucinda Williams perform at the Pabst last night. Even though I’ve seen her several times over the years I am always struck by just how sexy and sultry her music is.  She brings a very adult perspective to her tales of bittersweet relationships and good hot lusty lovin’.  She’s lived it and has no trouble making us believe it.

It looks like after ten years since it’s release that she’s finally getting tired of performing songs from her landmark, career defining and grammy winning album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I kept waiting for Joy but it never came. Neither did Metal Firecracker or the title track. Oh well, I’ve heard her perform them before.

She and the band may have reached their energetic peak of the night with a new, unreleased song called Honeybee. The song takes Lucinda’s love of ….ah,…er….well…love and turns it into a naughty, naughty little rocker. She played a lot of material from her latest album West, including Come On which was another highlight of the night.

I was disappointed however in the encore. Lucinda and the band came back out and performed three very slow, sleep inducing songs including the title track from West. After such a rocking, gritty concert it was a total buzzkill and ended the evening on a downer.

I have to commend the Pabst for offering ice cold Blue Ribbon tall boys for $3 each at their concerts. It makes for a very affordable night. Summerfest could take a lesson.

  1. Did you see Lucinda Williams when she opened up for Neil Young at the Marcus a while back. What a snooze fest that was, one dreary mid tempo song after another. The band looked like they were in a coma and she wasn’t much better.
I tend to like bands that look like they’re actually trying, people who phone it in just enrage me.

  2. I’m with you re: the PBR’s. My husband and I saw Of Montreal at the Pabst on St. Patrick’s Day. Green beer, green shots, and PBR tall boys. What more could you want. The band was amazing as well. If y’all didn’t get a chance to see them this spring, don’t worry because they’ll be back at the Pabst on October 4th. It’s an awesome show.

  3. I saw Lucinda Williams at Summerfest in 2005. It is the only time I’ve seen her. I thought she put on a very good show. She and the band sounded great. She’s going to be at Summerfest again this year. See you there.
