Sound Travels Sunday/Monday: Electro Swinging into A Malian Groove

Sound Travels gets back on track with a recap of the weekend addition to go with a new direction for the week; Malian Groove. Though I cannot compete with the Super Bowl, I hope some of you like the back cataloging of episodes, and want no one to miss the Sunday set, which was a high energy affair all about the electro-swing renaissance. Monday however is a contrast to that as I get going with some classic Malian grooves from artists like Ali Farka Toure and new music from Mdungu, Amadou & Mariam and King Kora to go with new remixes of Vieux Farka Toure’s excellent new album.

Now this is what I call a Jam Band (version 2.0)

It is truly amazing what you can do and create with internet. The ability to work with people from the four corners of the world is simply unbelievable. This project, video, and song is a great example of the potential of what someone can do with a computer, video cameras, and a simple connection to the internet.  The video features 8 people with 5 instruments originally from 4 Continents speaking 3 languages for 1 song. The musicians are Esna Yoon(singer), Dumfoundead (MC), Herbal T (MC), CAV3 (MPC), Tio (Guitar), DJ Zo (Scratches), Lukas (Piano) and Chirs Hong (Bass).

From the director Brian of Cain Mosni:

Concept was inspired by the amazing Galt MacDermot and his song called “Coffee Cold”. While I was in college, Handsome Boy Modeling (Prince Paul and Dan the Automator ) flipped it with J-Live and Roisin Murphy from Moloko and called it “The Truth”. Go check out all those versions. Know your history.

Enjoy.

You can actually download the song for free:

Getting High..Fives in Miami

Get your minds out of the gutta. Anyway, the guys from Funny or Die are back with another edition of their High-Five Montages. The last video they did was in DC for the Inauguration and it featured music from Milwaukee’s Kings Go Forth. This time there hit Miami during Super Bowl week. Enjoy. (BTW Who are you rooting for or do you even care?)

Rap Kreyòl | Haitian Hip Hop

When some people think of Haiti, they are likely to have a single story of the country and its people. People see Haiti as one of the poorest country in the western hemisphere. To the contrary, the country has rich histroy, and amazing creative spirit especially when it comes to music.   Haiti also has a deep history with hip hop which is called Rap Kreyòl. Kreyòl is the national language of the Republic of Haiti.

Kreyòl comes from a Portuguese word meaning “raised at home”. It was first used to refer to Europeans born and raised in the overseas colonies. Than, it was later used for languages that arose from the plantations that the Europeans established, using slaves imported from West Africa. Kreyòl was a new language resulting from African slaves’ efforts to speak the French that they heard when they arrived in Haiti. Slaves came to Haiti, from all over West Africa and spoke many different languages. (-Wikipedia)

Master Dji was considered to be the founder of Rap Kreyòl. He was the Dj of the group “Haiti Rap’ N Ragga” You can read more about him here.  I just discovered this amazing mix of Rap Kreyòl that carries on the tradition of Dji via Mad Decent. The mix was compile by DJ Still Life.

From DJ Still Life’s blog:

…I put together after having my mind blown by a couple of tracks that Lamin played for me on Worldwide Smash.  I spent the next couple weeks checking hard for whatever I could find, often low bitrate versions that fans had posted to share sites or social networking spots.  The mix is made up of some of my favorite tracks that I encountered, but is by no means a comprehensive overview of the genre.  There is a LOT of talent making music there, and unfortunately the recent earthquake there is sure to add another obstacle between these artists and the production and spread of their music.

I haven’t been able to find out much about the effects of the earthquake on the individual musicians, though according to wikipedia Young Cliff, a member of Barikad Crew, lost his life in the events surrounding the quake.  If you enjoy this music, please consider (if you haven’t already) donating to one of the many charities providing relief efforts in Haiti.  East Village Radio recommends Oxfam, but there are many other reputable organizations doing good work…

The music on this mix borrows a lot from the hip hop of the south, which its history has a definite connection to Haiti’s history especially during the slave trade.

Check out and download the mix and enjoy, and while you are listening donate to the various charities that are helping Haiti after the tragic earthquake.

Video | Massive Attack, “Splitting The Atom”

In 1991, a group from Bristol played a major role in making music one of my passions.  The group was Massive Attack and the album was Blue Lines.  Fast forward to now, and Massive Attack continue to push music forward. Massive Attack is about to drop their 5th studio album in almost 20 years on February 9th. Heligo Land is the name of the album.  The album will feature guests vocals from Tunde Adebimpe from TV On The Radio, Martina-Topley Bird (Tricky), Horace Andy, Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur) and Mazzy Star’s frontwoman Hope Sandoval. This is the second video from the album. The first video was very NSFW (I  let you search for it, but I warned you).

Listen to the New Gil Scott-Heron album before it is released

Gil Scott Heron

One of the most anticipated albums will be dropping next Tuesday, February 9th. It comes from a pioneer in music and in Hip Hop. The legend known as Gil Scott-Heron returns with a brand new album entitled “I’m New Here“. You can get a little taste of the album right now before it shelves. Gil Scott-Heron will also be playing Coachella on April 18th.
