On Tuesday December 8th, Radio Milwaukee is very proud to present a special screening of the Bill Withers documentary STILL BILL.
This film tells the unique journey of American soul artist Bill Withers. You know Bill’s work, wether you realize it or not. His songs like Ain’t No Sunshine, Lean On Me, and Just The Two Of Us are ingrained in the American pop conscience. He’s influenced many of our favorite singers, song writers, rockers and rappers and he continues to do so today. This film tells the story of his music and his life.
To celebrate this very special screening, two of our favorite Milwaukee musicians have agreed to join forces for a VERY SPECIAL performance. Milwaukee legend Paul Cebar and Milwaukee legend -in-the-making Evan Christain will perform together for the very first time. We are very excited to bring these two inspirational artists together in celebration of the music inspiration that is Bill Withers.
For a minimum donation of $10, to listener supported 88NINE, you can enjoy this great film, appetizers from our friends at the Hi Hat, and a seat to witness this once in a lifetime collaboration of two of Milwaukee’s favorite artists.
Join us Tuesday December 8th at 7:00pm at the Hi Hat Garage on Milwaukee’s east side, for STILL BILL, the movie.

Seven O’Clock Sample Time!!!!
This past weekend I was enjoying my weekly dose of jazz, when I happened upon this Kenny Barron Trio album. Kenny’s got a style that makes my Sunday coffee taste a little bit smoother…
In the 1960s, Kenny played with the Dizzy Gillespie quartet. He has gone on to work with hundreds of well-known musicians including Yusef Lateef, Freddie Hubbard, Buddy Rich, Ron Carter, and Stan Getz.
Check out his version of FUNGII MAMA….
If that sounds like you’ve heard that before… well you have! That sample was used by the Basement Jaxx on the album Rooty for their hit Do You Thing…
Milwaukee, you don’t know how good you got it; big city attractions and a small town vibe. Small enough to get around easy but big enough to be difficult to ignore, let alone count out. Advantages that are somehow easy to forget when from time to time special performers seem to skip a stop in our fair burgh for the gaudy Chicago skyline or even eschewing us in favor of the charm of Madison. 88Nine is committed to ending travesties like this, and judging from Alverno College’s Alverno Presents series, they are too.
Gotta hand it to the directors over there at Alverno Pesents, the season of darkness looks very bright due to their diligence at bringing a wide variety of worldly, unique artists to Milwaukee for what is becoming more and more common– very special concerts in a city used to get skipped over on the regular.
This weekend presents another opportunity for Milwaukee to see a performer of very special quality. Toshi Reagon and her band BIGLovely, who are on a short tour of the Midwest and will be in Milwaukee on Saturday night at Alverno’s Pittman Theater(8pm). I recently had a moment to chat with Toshi,
So it’s time to remove the veil of secrecy surrounding this week’s Top 5 Countdown; Tarik’s back with us here at 88Nine, so you know we gotta let him know we missed him. A talent like capital T isn’t easy to duplicate and we missed him. So of course, the Top 5 is a big fat welcome back. Here’s what we came up with…
Hello all!
It’s been a while since my last 7 o’clock sample post. I was under the weather for the past week, but I’m back and I’m back with a SUPER FUNKY sample.
I’ve been a big Basement Jaxx fan since my first paying DJ job in college. Back in 1999, I got a job in the UW-Milwaukee dormitory “night club”. I was only 17, but I’d already been DJing for a year. I knew how to use the gear, but I didn’t know how to rock a crowd. I learned a lot from that first gig, and one of my favorite dance floor killers, were the Basement Jaxx. This song in particular was a big hit for me…
This super funky jam came year’s before in the form of a number by a rare funk-jazz group called Locksmith. That jam was called, FAR BEYOND.
Locksmith is the band that played with Grover Washington Jr. during the late 70s, their funky album was released in 1980 on Arista Records. THAT’S WHY IT’S SO FUNKY!!!!

Sunday’s Sound Travels is a bit different than I’ve done in the past. Normally I do the selecting, mixing and editing of sets all myself. No problem, I love to do it. Well this week, I caught wind of a nice mix from a cat by the name of DJ OBaH, who has put together a proper mix of internationally minded music and musicians in a tight kink of afro-beat slinkiness.
It’s called Funk Aid for Africa and is a compilation for a charity project to help raise awareness and funds for African children affected by the AIDS crisis. The album contains funk, soul, and Latin tunes created by DJ OBaH – featuring songs from artists like Ticklah, Ursula Rucker, King Britt, Chico Mann and J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science, you know it’s hotter than not. Plus, 100% of the proceeds go to aid the construction of a ‘green’ sports facility at NextAid’s environmental community center in South Africa. Sounds like Sound Travels to me and I want to encourage you to download this mix and support the cause!

The Weekly Top 5 Countdown has gone commercial– sold out! In a way…well we’ve got a list of tunes that are used in a variety of commercial endeavors. Say what you will about the ethics of art and capitalism, but we actually think these songs didn’t suffer for their use in commercials. Far from it, they likely benefited and in some cases, is the basis for their success. Here’s what Scott Mullins and I came up with…
#5
The Walkmen “We’ve Been Had” used in a Saturn Ion car commercial
#4
Nick Drake “Pink Moon” used in a VW commercials
#3
Matt & Kim “Daylight” used in a Bacardi Mojito commercial
#2
The Cult “She Sells Sanctuary” used in a Nissan Commercial
#1
Telepopmusik “Breathe” from a Mitsubishi car commercial
